Purina’s manufacturing facility in Clinton is celebrating its milestone 50th anniversary in 2019, but its longevity in the community isn’t the only reason local residents and pet owners should be interested in this factory location.
Purina is the No. 1 pet care company in the United States, with a portfolio of some of the most popular and trusted pet care brands, spanning dog and cat food, treats and litter. Since 1969, Clinton has been home to a dry pet food and treats facility that plays an important role in Purina’s network of 20 factories across the U.S.
The Clinton factory’s 360 associates take pride in what they do to bring high-quality and nutritious products to pets’ bowls every day, because it’s not just business, it’s personal.
“With decades of passion and expertise in pet food manufacturing, thousands of daily quality checks, and a commitment from top-level management to the production floor, Clinton is first and foremost focused on quality products and safety of our employees,” said Roger Brecht, Factory Manager. “We’re pet owners too, and the products we make here at the factory are fed to our own four-legged family members.”
Clinton also has become a hub at Purina for innovation and design, testing and launching new products. In the last 50 years, over 190 different products have been produced in Clinton.
In 2018 alone, the factory had 61 test runs and 27 new product launches. Current Purina products that got their start in Clinton include Beneful, Purina ONE and Purina Pro Plan’s innovative “shredded” varieties and Beggin’ Strips. Clinton continually makes investments back into the operations to ensure they are using the latest technology to make food and treats that enrich the lives of pets. In the last five years, Purina has invested $60 million into the local operations.
Purina also strives to make a positive impact on the environment by reducing greenhouse emissions, improving water efficiency, reducing waste, and transporting products using efficient methods. In the state of Iowa, Purina also has committed $1 million to help preserve wetlands and promote water quality through a partnership with Ducks Unlimited, a leader in conservation practices.
With Purina being one of the largest employers in Clinton, the factory is also committed to supporting local communities. The company regularly provides dog and cat food donations to area pet shelters and police K9 units and also supports other causes in the community including Junior Achievement.
“Congratulations to Purina on its 50th anniversary in Clinton,” said Maureen Miller, President/CEO
Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce. “The Clinton Area Chamber of Commerce is grateful for the company’s half-century commitment to growth and prosperity in our region and remains a partner for continued success for the next half-century.”
